AB 5000 Zero Gap

The original REP Fitness AB-5200 (1.0) is a heavy-duty adjustable bench built from 11-and-7-gauge steel, weighing 125 lbs with a 1,000 lb weight capacity. Nicknamed a “tank” by owners, it uses a fast, tool-free ladder-and-cage adjustment system across 7 back positions (0 to 85 degrees) and 3 seat positions, with a long 42” back pad and a 55.25” total pad length that lets most users flat bench without ever crossing its 1.8” pad gap – the hinge sits below pad level so the gap doesn’t interfere with lying flat. It does not decline, unlike REP’s FID-branded benches. Designed for home gyms, it stores vertically in a 2.8 sq ft footprint and moves on two wheels and a stainless pull handle despite its weight. The pad uses REP’s grippy, dense-foam-and-plywood material over a ladderback frame with a nylon bolt cover to protect the paint, and it shipped in Metallic Black, Red, and Blue powder-coat finishes. It has since been discontinued and replaced in REP’s lineup by the AB-5200 2.0, which adds a decline option, more back/seat angles, a lighter 115 lb frame, and a protective liner on the vertical-storage stand.

An adjustable bench tilts from flat to incline (and often decline) so one bench covers flat press, incline press, shoulder work, and rows. It’s usually the second thing people buy after a rack and bar — and the piece you press heavy over, so build quality matters.
Anyone doing barbell or dumbbell pressing at home. A flat bench is enough if you only bench flat; otherwise an adjustable bench is the more versatile buy. Most home lifters are well served in the $400-$600 range.

| 4.3/5 | 5 reviews | 5 on-topic threads considered via pullpush.io archive search. 'My first home gym' (r/homegym, score 170) lists an AB5200 v1 in the owner's equipment. Two threads were [removed] with no surviving body text. Selected high-score comments are strongly positive ('phenomenal,' 'great budget alternative,' 'REP pad is King'), with a recurring, convergent caveat that the bench's 125 lb weight makes it cumbersome to reposition in a small garage gym -- echoed by the expert reviews. | |
| Youtube | 4.7/5 | 3 reviews | 3 videos considered with usable transcripts, all favorable. Gluck's Gym calls it 'possibly the best adjustable bench dollar for dollar' at this price range, praising build quality and the 85-degree top back position. Basement Brandon (owner) calls it 'my favorite bench in the gym' and usually the best value pick versus Rogue and GetRx after shipping/tax. Mac Strength Co. (owner) says it beats REP's own AB3000 'in a lot of ways,' citing pad quality and stability. No material criticism beyond the lack of a decline option and its 125 lb weight. |
The original AB-5200 (1.0) is a heavy-duty 11-and-7-gauge steel adjustable bench that reviewers consistently call one of the best flat/incline benches available, before it was discontinued and replaced by REP’s AB-5200 2.0. Its standout dimension is functionality: a fast ladder-style adjustment system, a long 42” back pad that lets most users bench without ever crossing the 1.8” pad gap, and 7 back positions plus vertical storage in a compact footprint. Build quality and durability are similarly strong – owners report it holding up for years of heavy use with no wobble – though a few units shipped with minor QC nits (a slightly canted seat, trim that peels). The clear weak dimension is now value: it can’t decline like REP’s FID benches, and since it’s been phased out of production, it’s no longer available new at any retailer – only secondhand.
