Precor Icarian Seated Preacher Curl

The Precor Icarian Seated Preacher Curl is a commercial-gym bicep-isolation bench from Precor’s now-discontinued Icarian free-weight line, which has since been folded into Precor’s current Discovery and Vitality benches-and-racks series. It uses the line’s signature 2” x 4” bent-steel frame construction on a single-post tripod base, so dumbbells and plates can pass freely underneath the bench during setup. An angled, contoured arm pad isolates the biceps in a seated position, with an adjustable seat and two bar-rest positions to fit a range of user heights, rubber foot pads to protect flooring, and grab handles to assist entry and exit. It accepts either a barbell or dumbbells. Because Precor discontinued the model, it is no longer sold new – it now circulates only through gym-equipment remanufacturers and liquidators, who typically add a comprehensive 1-year parts-and-labor warranty to refurbished units.

What is a Machine?

What a strength machine is

A strength machine guides the resistance along a fixed path so you can train a movement safely, often without a spotter. The main types: selectorized (pick weight with a pin), plate-loaded (add your own plates for a heavier ceiling and better feel), and functional trainers / cable machines (adjustable pulleys for dozens of exercises).

Machines vs. free weights

Machines shine for isolation, safety, and high-rep hypertrophy, and for training hard alone. Free weights build more stabilizer strength and carry over better to sport. Most well-rounded home gyms use a rack and barbell as the core and add one machine — often a cable/functional trainer or a lat-pulldown/row — to fill the gaps.

The sub-types worth knowing

“Machines” covers several categories that barely compete with each other: GHDs for hamstring and posterior-chain work, belt squats for loading the legs without the bar on your back, leg press / hack squat combos for heavy quad volume, reverse hypers for posterior-chain work and lower-back decompression, cable towers and functional trainers for pulling movements, and row machines. Pick the one that fills a gap in what your rack and barbell already do. Almost nobody needs two.

Space and standalone vs. rack-mounted

Most of these come in a standalone version and a cheaper rack-attachment version. The attachment saves floor space and money, but often gives up stability or range of motion — a tradeoff worth checking on the specific product rather than assuming, since it varies a lot between designs.

A note on ratings

Machine listings frequently show a manufacturer’s own on-site rating, which runs high (4.7–5.0 is typical) and sometimes pools reviews across a whole product family rather than the exact configuration you’re buying. Where we have independent hands-on coverage, our summaries anchor to that instead, and say so on the product page.

Reviews by source

Expert 4.44/5 3 reviews

The Precor Icarian Seated Preacher Curl is a discontinued commercial bicep-isolation bench — Precor’s Icarian free-weight line has since been superseded by its Discovery and Vitality series. Independent signal is thin: a 3-review GymRadar sample rates it 4.44/5, with build quality the standout at a perfect 5.00 thanks to its 2”x4” bent-steel frame and single-post tripod base, though no written reviews or third-party teardown exist to confirm long-term durability. Because it’s out of production, sourcing one now means going through a remanufacturer or liquidator at prices that have ranged roughly $789–$2,149 depending on dealer and condition, with stock intermittent — value is much harder to pin down than the GymRadar sub-score suggests.

  • +Build quality: fully-welded 2"x4" bent-steel frame with a single-post tripod base — GymRadar's owner sample rated build quality a perfect 5.00/5 (GymRadar)
  • +Functionality: dual bar-rest positions and an adjustable seat let the angled arm pad fit a range of user heights (Global Fitness refurbished listing)
  • +Versatility: works with either a barbell or dumbbells, and the bent-frame tripod design lets weights travel freely underneath the bench (Fitness Equipment Empire)
  • +Value: GymRadar's small owner sample scored value 4.00/5, in line with commercial-grade gear built to outlast typical home-rack duty cycles (GymRadar)
  • Durability: no independent long-term review or expert teardown exists — the 4.44/5 GymRadar average rests on just 3 owner ratings with no written reviews recovered (GymRadar)
  • Value: Precor discontinued the Icarian line, so it's only available through remanufacturers/liquidators at prices that have ranged from about $789 to $2,149 across dealers, and every listing checked was out of stock at time of writing (Fitness Superstore, Global Fitness)
  • Functionality: single-purpose bicep isolation — no multi-exercise capability beyond curls (product description)
  • Versatility: as a full-size commercial bench (52"x33"x36", 119 lb), it's a dedicated floor-space commitment for one exercise (Global Fitness refurbished listing)
