York Spinlock Vintage Collars

York’s Spinlock Vintage Collars are heavy-duty barbell collars from York Barbell’s classic era, built to lock onto Olympic (2”) barbell sleeves with a wing-nut-and-spin-lock mechanism: a wing nut tightens the collar against the sleeve, then a top mechanism spins to lock it in place. They run roughly 5 lb per collar (about 10 lb for a pair), with a leather-lined interior that grips the sleeve without marring it – and, per owner reports, dries out over decades of storage and benefits from occasional cleaning and lubrication to keep the spin mechanism smooth.

Per GymRadar’s description, this design “came after” York’s earlier shipwheel-style spinlock collars, and owners consistently rate them as more durable – one reviewer notes the older shipwheel collars are prone to snapping a hub, while these hold up under long-term use. They’re common enough on the vintage market that a pair typically runs around $100, well short of scarce-collectible pricing, and York’s current-line 2” Olympic spin-lock collar (a modern, cast-iron continuation of the same wing-nut-and-spin design) has sold in the $48-72 per pair range as a reference point. Some owners buy a set primarily to complete a vintage-themed barbell and plate setup rather than for daily training use.
