Cybex Plate Loaded Smith Press Machine

The Cybex Plate Loaded Smith Press is a commercial-grade, plate-loaded Smith machine built around Cybex’s biomechanically-angled rail design: a 7-degree forward pitch that follows the natural arc of a bench press or squat instead of a straight vertical bar path. A 15-lb counterbalanced take-off weight keeps the bar approachable for lifters of any level, and 18 bar and catch hooks adjust in 4” increments to fit a wide range of exercises and user heights. The open, walk-through frame lets a bench roll straight through for pressing work, and the machine accepts standard 2” Olympic plates (sold separately). At 380 lbs and built from welded steel, it’s designed for the wear of a commercial facility rather than a garage gym. Cybex has since discontinued this line – Life Fitness (Cybex’s parent) lists it as discontinued with no current manufacturer price, so it’s now found mainly through commercial equipment resellers selling remanufactured or used units.

What is a Machine?

What a strength machine is

A strength machine guides the resistance along a fixed path so you can train a movement safely, often without a spotter. The main types: selectorized (pick weight with a pin), plate-loaded (add your own plates for a heavier ceiling and better feel), and functional trainers / cable machines (adjustable pulleys for dozens of exercises).

Machines vs. free weights

Machines shine for isolation, safety, and high-rep hypertrophy, and for training hard alone. Free weights build more stabilizer strength and carry over better to sport. Most well-rounded home gyms use a rack and barbell as the core and add one machine — often a cable/functional trainer or a lat-pulldown/row — to fill the gaps.

The sub-types worth knowing

“Machines” covers several categories that barely compete with each other: GHDs for hamstring and posterior-chain work, belt squats for loading the legs without the bar on your back, leg press / hack squat combos for heavy quad volume, reverse hypers for posterior-chain work and lower-back decompression, cable towers and functional trainers for pulling movements, and row machines. Pick the one that fills a gap in what your rack and barbell already do. Almost nobody needs two.

Space and standalone vs. rack-mounted

Most of these come in a standalone version and a cheaper rack-attachment version. The attachment saves floor space and money, but often gives up stability or range of motion — a tradeoff worth checking on the specific product rather than assuming, since it varies a lot between designs.

A note on ratings

Machine listings frequently show a manufacturer’s own on-site rating, which runs high (4.7–5.0 is typical) and sometimes pools reviews across a whole product family rather than the exact configuration you’re buying. Where we have independent hands-on coverage, our summaries anchor to that instead, and say so on the product page.

A commercial-only plate-loaded Smith press — Cybex/Life Fitness has discontinued the line, so this is a facility fixture, not an active home-gym buy. Its standout dimension is build quality: a 7-degree forward rail pitch that tracks the natural arc of a bench press or squat, smooth linear-bearing travel, and 380 lbs of welded steel built to survive decades of commercial use. Versatility is its weak spot — an open walk-through frame lets benches roll in, but it’s still a single-plane guided press, not a rack. With the model discontinued and no verified retail price, value is unmeasurable; treat any listing you find as a used/remanufactured price, not a current one.

  • +Build quality: 7-degree forward rail pitch follows the natural arc of a bench press or squat rather than a straight vertical path (gxmmat.us buying guide)
  • +Build quality: linear-bearing system gives smooth, low-friction bar travel (gxmmat.us buying guide)
  • +Durability: commercial-grade welded-steel construction rated to outlast the owner with proper maintenance (gxmmat.us buying guide)
  • +Functionality: 15-lb counterbalanced take-off weight and 18 catch hooks in 4" increments make it approachable for lifters of any level (Life Fitness/Cybex catalog)
  • Value: line is discontinued with no manufacturer price published and no verified current retail listing — any figure you find is a used/remanufactured price, not new (Life Fitness/Cybex catalog)
  • Versatility: single guided press plane, not a multi-exercise rack — the walk-through design only adds bench clearance (Life Fitness/Cybex catalog)
  • Durability: counterbalance cables are prone to fraying and coating damage over years of hard use, and scratched guide rods aren't easily repaired (gxmmat.us buying guide)
  • Functionality: 380 lbs and a ~7' x 5' footprint make it heavy and difficult to relocate without a truck and disassembly (gxmmat.us buying guide)
