Buy NowBells of Steel’s Fractional Iron Plates - 0.5 LB are cast-iron micro-loading plates for barbell work, sold as a set of 8 (2lbs per side, 4lbs per pair). Instead of forcing 5-10lb jumps on exercises like overhead presses and biceps curls, they let you add weight in smaller 1-4lb increments – useful once a lift’s normal plate jump starts stalling progress. Each plate has a hexagonal profile, a 52mm center hole sized for a standard 2” Olympic barbell sleeve, and a guaranteed weight tolerance of +/-16 grams. They’re cast rather than machined, so the manufacturer notes minor cosmetic blemishes are standard; they ship in gray or black.

Weight plates load your barbell — but “plate” covers two very different tools. Bumper plates are rubber discs around a steel hub, all the same ~450mm diameter, built to be dropped from overhead without damaging your floor or bar; they’re the default for Olympic lifting and CrossFit. Iron/steel plates are denser and thinner per pound, cheaper, and quieter to load, but most aren’t made to be dropped — better for slow, controlled powerlifting-style work.
Every barbell gym needs plates. Most home lifters should start with a bumper set, then add iron, change, or specialty plates as a second purchase once they know what their training is missing.

Bells of Steel’s fractional plates do what they promise: half-pound cast-iron hex plates that let you micro-load presses and curls in 1lb jumps instead of the usual 5lb barbell-plate increments, and they fit any 2” Olympic sleeve. Functionality is the standout – an independent reviewer weighed a set himself and confirmed they land right at spec, and owners like that they’re compact enough to toss in a gym bag. Build quality is the weakest dimension: because these are cast rather than machined, GymRadar reviewers report inconsistent finish and, in one case, up to half an ounce of variance between individual plates in the same set, so buyers chasing calibrated accuracy should look elsewhere.
