Hammer Strength’s Urethane 12-Sided Olympic Plates are the commercial-gym plate line sold directly by Life Fitness – fully sourced and manufactured in the USA from overmolded, heavy-duty urethane. The 12-sided anti-roll shape keeps plates from wandering off the platform when they’re set down, and two patented, diametrically-opposed handle openings with ergonomic textured grips make loading, carrying, and rack storage easier than a plain round plate. A precision-machined, chamfered center hole gives a secure fit on standard Olympic bars. The line spans six weights – 2.5, 5, 10, 25, 35, and 45 lb – with the two lightest sold without handles and the rest featuring dual handle cutouts, and each plate carries a 7-year parts-and-labor warranty. It’s priced and built as commercial equipment (real buyers on Life Fitness’s own site and on r/homegym alike praise the build quality but repeatedly flag the price as steep), rather than a budget home-gym plate.

What is a Weight Plate?

What weight plates are

Weight plates load your barbell — but “plate” covers two very different tools. Bumper plates are rubber discs around a steel hub, all the same ~450mm diameter, built to be dropped from overhead without damaging your floor or bar; they’re the default for Olympic lifting and CrossFit. Iron/steel plates are denser and thinner per pound, cheaper, and quieter to load, but most aren’t made to be dropped — better for slow, controlled powerlifting-style work.

What actually matters

  • Bumper vs. iron. Buy bumpers if the bar might hit the floor; iron (or rubber-coated iron) for controlled lifts and compact loading.
  • Weight tolerance. How far a plate strays from its stated weight (±1% is tight, ±3% loose). It barely matters for general training but adds up if you chase a specific total — which is why serious lifters add small change / fractional plates.
  • Collar fit & bounce. The center hole should fit your bar’s sleeve snugly; rubber durometer (around 88 Shore A) controls how “dead” a dropped plate lands.
  • Coating & set composition. Virgin rubber holds up and smells less than recycled crumb rubber; plan a starting set (usually a pair each of 45/25/10/5 lb plus change plates) around the lifts you actually do.

Who it’s for

Every barbell gym needs plates. Most home lifters should start with a bumper set, then add iron, change, or specialty plates as a second purchase once they know what their training is missing.

Hammer Strength’s Urethane 12-Sided Olympic Plates are the commercial-gym-grade plate found in many big-box facilities, sold direct from Life Fitness in six weight increments from 2.5 to 45 lb. Their build quality and durability draw consistent praise from real buyers – overmolded US-made urethane, a precision-machined chamfered hole, dual ergonomic handles, and a 7-year warranty, with r/homegym owners from 2020 still calling them “flawless” and “the toughest plates around” – but the only independent numeric rating available, GymRadar’s small 5-review sample, tells a cooler story: 2.27/5 overall with a particularly weak 1.80/5 on Performance. Value is the clearest weak spot across every source – manufacturer-page reviewers, Reddit buyers, and GymRadar’s Value subscore (2.40/5) all flag the price as steep. Treat the glowing 5.0/5 manufacturer widget with caution – it’s Life Fitness’s own self-hosted rating, not independent evidence.

  • +Build quality: overmolded US-made urethane with a precision-machined, chamfered center hole and dual ergonomic textured handles, backed by a 7-year warranty (Life Fitness manufacturer page)
  • +Durability: r/homegym buyers from 2020 still describe the plates as "flawless" and "the toughest plates around," with grips that "feel amazing" (r/homegym via pullpush.io)
  • +Functionality: the 12-sided anti-roll shape plus diametrically-opposed handle openings make loading, carrying, and storage noticeably easier than a round plate (Life Fitness manufacturer page)
  • +Versatility: sold across six weight increments (2.5, 5, 10, 25, 35, 45 lb), letting buyers assemble a full plate set from one line (Life Fitness manufacturer page)
  • Value: consistently flagged as expensive -- manufacturer-page reviewers call them "a little pricey"/"expensive," Reddit buyers echo the same, and GymRadar's independent Value subscore is a weak 2.40/5 (Life Fitness reviews; r/homegym; GymRadar)
  • Performance: GymRadar's small independent sample rates Performance just 1.80/5, the lowest of its three subscores, dragging the aggregate to 2.27/5 (n=5) -- a sharp contrast with the manufacturer's own 5.0/5 widget (GymRadar)
  • Build quality: one manufacturer-page reviewer reported the urethane "produce[s] an off gas odor unlike the original Iron Grip plates" on arrival (Life Fitness reviews)
  • Durability: independent signal is thin -- only 5 GymRadar reviews with no review text behind the scores, and the positive Reddit anecdotes date to 2020-2021, so nothing recent verifies long-term wear (GymRadar; r/homegym)
