What a power rack is

A power rack is a four-post steel cage with adjustable J-cups and safety pins or straps that catch the bar when a rep fails — so you can squat, bench, and press heavy while training alone. It’s the anchor of a serious home gym: get the rack right and a bench, a barbell, and plates turn into a real strength gym.

What actually matters

• Upright size & gauge. Bigger tubing with thicker walls means a stiffer rack. 3x3” 11-gauge steel is the durable home-gym standard; 2x3” 11-gauge (Rogue’s Monster Lite tier) is a lighter, cheaper step down that’s still plenty for most lifters. 2x2”/14-gauge entry racks (like REP’s PR-1100) are fine for lighter training and tight budgets.
• Hardware & hole spacing. Look for 1” “Westside” spacing through the bench and pull zone for fine safety and J-cup height adjustment; numbered uprights make re-racking repeatable. Hardware runs from 3/8” on entry racks to 5/8” (Monster Lite / REP 4000) to oversized 1” (full Monster / REP 5000).
• Footprint, height & mounting. Measure your ceiling first — a 90”+ rack plus a pull-up bar needs real headroom. Freestanding four-post cages are the default; flat-foot racks stand without bolting (good for renters or finished floors); folding wall-mounted racks reclaim floor space at the cost of some rigidity and attachment depth.
• Safeties & ecosystem. Strap safeties are gentler on the bar; pin-and-pipe safeties are cheaper and rigid. And a rack is a platform — Rogue and REP both have deep attachment ecosystems, so buying into one hole pattern matters if you’ll add cables, a lat pulldown, or a belt squat later.

Who it’s for

Anyone lifting a barbell alone should own one. Match the rack to your space, budget, and how far you plan to build out — most home lifters are well served by a 3x3” 11-gauge rack in the $400-$1,000 range.
