Buy NowThe Ivanko Chrome OMC is a three-spoke, chrome-plated Olympic plate that became one of the best-known chrome weight sets on the West Coast during the 1980s. Its medium deep-dish profile runs across the entire weight range, including the smallest change plates, and the recessed lip makes loading, unloading, and carrying easier than a flat-faced plate. Rising production costs and the industry’s broader shift toward rubber-encased weights eventually ended the line, and Ivanko no longer lists OMC in its current Olympic-plate catalog – today it circulates mainly as a sought-after collector’s item, prized for its mirror chrome finish when well preserved. A very limited quantity of genuine “new old stock” pairs still surfaces directly from Ivanko’s own warehouse clearance from time to time, but otherwise the plates are found only on the secondary market, where chrome condition – and therefore price – varies widely from set to set.

Weight plates load your barbell — but “plate” covers two very different tools. Bumper plates are rubber discs around a steel hub, all the same ~450mm diameter, built to be dropped from overhead without damaging your floor or bar; they’re the default for Olympic lifting and CrossFit. Iron/steel plates are denser and thinner per pound, cheaper, and quieter to load, but most aren’t made to be dropped — better for slow, controlled powerlifting-style work.
Every barbell gym needs plates. Most home lifters should start with a bumper set, then add iron, change, or specialty plates as a second purchase once they know what their training is missing.

A well-regarded entry point into vintage chrome plate collecting: owners consistently praise the three-spoke design and mirror finish, and the medium deep-dish profile extends across the whole weight range down to the smallest change plates. The standout dimension is functionality – the deep-dish lip makes loading, unloading, and carrying easy even on the smallest plates. The weakest is build quality consistency: chrome finish varies noticeably by production run, and because production ended decades ago, condition on any given secondhand set ranges from showroom mirror finish to surface rust depending on how it was stored.
