Marrs Bar Lite - 35lbs Safety Squat Bar

The Marrs Bar Lite is a 35lb safety squat bar from Solid Bar Fitness (Kansas, USA) – a hollowed-out, lighter-weight version of the original 65lb Marrs Bar that keeps the same patented hands-free “backpack” harness and 45-degree camber drop for joint-friendly, low-bar squat positioning without axial load on the neck or cervical spine. It’s aimed at beginners, older lifters, youth athletes, and rehab/PT users who’d otherwise struggle to handle the full-size bar, while still supporting up to roughly 400-450lb of added weight. Construction is 1.5” (38mm) black powder-coated steel with chrome sleeves, maintenance-free bronze bushings, and the same molded polyurethane harness padding as the original, standard Olympic collars fit the sleeves, and the bar ships unassembled in three pieces with an included Allen wrench. Compared to the original, the Lite trades sleeve length (12.5” loadable versus 16.25”) and top-end load capacity for roughly half the bar weight and a lower price.

What is a Barbell?

What a barbell is

The barbell is the center of a strength gym — the bar you squat, press, deadlift, and clean with. A men’s Olympic bar is 20 kg (44 lb) and 7.2 ft long (15 kg / 6.5 ft for women). The specs that matter: knurl (the grip texture — aggressive for pulls, milder for high-rep work), shaft diameter (28–29 mm for barbell lifts), sleeve rotation (bushings are fine for slow lifts; bearings spin fast for the Olympic lifts), tensile strength (~190k+ PSI resists bending), and coating (bare steel grips best but rusts; stainless and Cerakote trade grip for corrosion resistance).

Which one to buy

For general lifting, a multipurpose bar (28–28.5mm shaft, dual knurl marks, no center knurl) does squats, bench, deadlifts, and the occasional clean off one bar — this is the right first barbell for most home gyms. Choose a dedicated power bar (29mm, stiffer, aggressive center-knurl grip) only once you know you’re training squat/bench/deadlift specifically and want the stiffest, grippiest tool for that job. A dedicated Olympic weightlifting bar (needle bearings, more whip) is worth it only if you clean, snatch, or jerk regularly.

Beyond your main bar, specialty bars solve specific problems rather than replacing it: a safety squat bar shifts load off sore shoulders, a trap/hex bar takes stress off a cranky lower back on pulls, and a curl bar’s camber reduces wrist strain on isolation work. Add them once you know which problem you actually have.

The Marrs Bar Lite takes the original Marrs Bar’s patented hands-free “backpack” harness and 45-degree camber drop and hollows out the shaft to cut the weight from 65lb down to 35lb, aiming squarely at beginners, older lifters, and rehab/PT users who’d otherwise struggle to handle the full-size bar. Its standout dimension is functionality: reviewers and retailers alike describe it as feeling identical to the original in use, with the same joint-friendly, hands-free squat mechanics, just far easier to rack and carry. Its weakest dimension is durability evidence: coverage is thin and largely retailer-adjacent, and the one hands-on review notes the powder coat will blemish with use and the harness padding may crack over time – cosmetic issues rather than functional failures, but not yet confirmed by independent long-term owners.

  • +Functionality: retains the original Marrs Bar's patented hands-free harness and 45-degree camber drop, supporting safety squats, front squats, good mornings, and lunges (marrs-bar.com, Strenco)
  • +Value: at $549-599 it runs roughly $50-100 cheaper than the 65lb original while delivering functionally identical mechanics (Strenco first-look review)
  • +Versatility: opens up safety-squat-bar training to beginners, youth athletes, older lifters, and shoulder/elbow rehab cases who couldn't manage the 65lb version's weight (Texas Power Bars, Strenco)
  • +Build quality: solid 1.5"/38mm steel construction with maintenance-free bronze bushings, made in the USA (Texas Power Bars)
  • Durability: reviewer notes the black powder coat is prone to blemishing and the harness padding may crack or split over time with use, though this reportedly doesn't affect function (Strenco/Grant Broggi video review)
  • Functionality: shorter 12.5" loadable sleeve versus the original's 16.25" limits how much plate can be loaded per side
  • Value: reduced weight capacity (400-450lb depending on source) versus the full-size original may limit stronger intermediate/advanced lifters
  • Build quality: independent coverage is thin -- the only full-length review found comes from a retailer that also sells the bar, so it carries some promotional interest
