Micro Gainz 2.5LB Add-On Weight Plate for Rep x Pepin Adjustable Dumbbells

Buy Now · $129.99

Micro Gainz makes this 4-plate set specifically to add on to REP x PÉPIN FAST Series adjustable dumbbells, closing the gap between the stock dumbbell’s 10 lb weight jumps. Each of the four laser-cut, powder-coated steel plates weighs 2.5 lb and is 7/16” thick, and clips onto the dumbbell’s add-on slot via a pair of spring-loaded pins rather than the universal round clamp Micro Gainz uses on its other, standard-handle plates – this SKU only fits the Rep x Pepin handle, not generic 1” dumbbell bars. Plates are made in the USA and laser-etched with their weight.

Independent coverage of the wider Micro Gainz plate family (Garage Gym Lab, ShreddedDad) rates build quality and spring-clamp retention highly, and Micro Gainz backs the line with a 2-year warranty. On this specific SKU’s own product page, buyers confirm the plates hold securely and add genuine value for progressive overload, but flag two recurring gripes: the springs are noticeably tight out of the box and take a few on/off cycles to loosen, and once a plate is attached the protruding rivets are too wide for the dumbbell to sit in the Rep stand’s storage cradle.

What is a Weight Plate?

What weight plates are

Weight plates load your barbell — but “plate” covers two very different tools. Bumper plates are rubber discs around a steel hub, all the same ~450mm diameter, built to be dropped from overhead without damaging your floor or bar; they’re the default for Olympic lifting and CrossFit. Iron/steel plates are denser and thinner per pound, cheaper, and quieter to load, but most aren’t made to be dropped — better for slow, controlled powerlifting-style work.

What actually matters

  • Bumper vs. iron. Buy bumpers if the bar might hit the floor; iron (or rubber-coated iron) for controlled lifts and compact loading.
  • Weight tolerance. How far a plate strays from its stated weight (±1% is tight, ±3% loose). It barely matters for general training but adds up if you chase a specific total — which is why serious lifters add small change / fractional plates.
  • Collar fit & bounce. The center hole should fit your bar’s sleeve snugly; rubber durometer (around 88 Shore A) controls how “dead” a dropped plate lands.
  • Coating & set composition. Virgin rubber holds up and smells less than recycled crumb rubber; plan a starting set (usually a pair each of 45/25/10/5 lb plus change plates) around the lifts you actually do.

Who it’s for

Every barbell gym needs plates. Most home lifters should start with a bumper set, then add iron, change, or specialty plates as a second purchase once they know what their training is missing.

A well-built, purpose-made way to close the gap between the REP x PÉPIN FAST Series’s stock 10lb jumps: laser-cut, powder-coated steel plates that spring-clip onto the dumbbell’s add-on slot in seconds. Build quality is the standout — reviewers of the wider Micro Gainz plate line rate construction tolerances and spring-clamp retention highly, and it’s made in the USA with a 2-year warranty. Versatility is the weak spot for this specific SKU: the protruding rivets keep the dumbbell from sitting in the Rep stand’s storage cradle once a plate is attached, and the springs are stiff enough on a fresh unit that several buyers needed a few cycles to loosen them before removal felt easy.

  • +Build quality: laser-cut steel with matte black powder coating and laser-etched markings, made in the USA (manufacturer product page)
  • +Functionality: spring-clip mounts directly into the Rep x Pepin FAST Series add-on slot, purpose-fit rather than a universal clamp (manufacturer product page)
  • +Value: adds fine 2.5lb increments without buying a second dumbbell set or a heavier stock pair (manufacturer product page, r/homegym DIY-stand thread)
  • +Durability: 2-year warranty and sintered/laser-cut steel construction rated highly across the wider Micro Gainz plate line (Garage Gym Lab, ShreddedDad)
  • Versatility: attached plates' rivets are too wide to fit the dumbbell into the Rep stand's storage cradle (manufacturer on-site reviews)
  • Functionality: springs are noticeably tight out of the box and need several on/off cycles to loosen before removal is easy (manufacturer product page and on-site reviews)
  • Value: at $129.99 for four plates (10lb total capacity), it's a premium price for a micro-loading accessory (manufacturer product page)
