The GMWD Pendulum Squat Machine PS01 is a budget, plate-loaded, bolt-together pendulum squat machine designed as a knee- and back-friendly alternative to hack squats and traditional barbell squats. A pendulum arm delivers a deeper squat range with a smooth, isolated motion; a supportive backrest locks the lifter’s back and shoulders in place to remove axial spinal loading while the legs do the work, targeting the quads, glutes, hamstrings, and adductors. The non-slip footplate adjusts across three angles (30/35/40 degrees), and fixed safety stops with a security lock let lifters set a safe range of motion. Reviewers consistently describe the movement as smooth and comparable in feel to pricier commercial pendulum units, at roughly a fraction of the cost – though the bolt-together frame is reported to flex somewhat under heavier loads compared to fully welded commercial machines.

What is a Machine?

What a strength machine is

A strength machine guides the resistance along a fixed path so you can train a movement safely, often without a spotter. The main types: selectorized (pick weight with a pin), plate-loaded (add your own plates for a heavier ceiling and better feel), and functional trainers / cable machines (adjustable pulleys for dozens of exercises).

Machines vs. free weights

Machines shine for isolation, safety, and high-rep hypertrophy, and for training hard alone. Free weights build more stabilizer strength and carry over better to sport. Most well-rounded home gyms use a rack and barbell as the core and add one machine — often a cable/functional trainer or a lat-pulldown/row — to fill the gaps.

The sub-types worth knowing

“Machines” covers several categories that barely compete with each other: GHDs for hamstring and posterior-chain work, belt squats for loading the legs without the bar on your back, leg press / hack squat combos for heavy quad volume, reverse hypers for posterior-chain work and lower-back decompression, cable towers and functional trainers for pulling movements, and row machines. Pick the one that fills a gap in what your rack and barbell already do. Almost nobody needs two.

Space and standalone vs. rack-mounted

Most of these come in a standalone version and a cheaper rack-attachment version. The attachment saves floor space and money, but often gives up stability or range of motion — a tradeoff worth checking on the specific product rather than assuming, since it varies a lot between designs.

A note on ratings

Machine listings frequently show a manufacturer’s own on-site rating, which runs high (4.7–5.0 is typical) and sometimes pools reviews across a whole product family rather than the exact configuration you’re buying. Where we have independent hands-on coverage, our summaries anchor to that instead, and say so on the product page.

The GMWD PS01 delivers a genuinely smooth, joint-friendly pendulum squat feel — reviewers consistently compare its resistance curve favorably to commercial units like the Arsenal and Atlantis pendulums — at a fraction of the price of rivals such as the Pandemonium Squat. Functionality is the standout dimension; durability is the weakest, with independent reviewers and buyers alike reporting frame and pendulum-arm flex, creaking back-pad hardware, and assembly-bolt threading issues once loads climb past roughly 150-190 lbs. It’s a strong value pick for beginner and intermediate lifters using it as a quad-focused accessory movement, but stronger lifters chasing heavier loads should look at sturdier, pricier alternatives.

  • +Functionality: legit pendulum squat feel with a balanced resistance curve, praised as comparable to commercial Arsenal/Atlantis units (King of the Gym, r/homegym)
  • +Functionality: excellent range of motion and joint-friendly movement that removes axial spinal loading (The Jungle Gym Reviews, GMWD customer story)
  • +Value: roughly $800-900 shipped, about half the price of comparable pendulum machines like the French Pendulum (r/homegym)
  • +Value: compact, spring-based counterbalance saves 1-2 feet of footprint versus counterweight-style pendulums, fits on a single stall mat (r/homegym)
  • +Build quality: adjustable footboard angles (30/35/40 degrees) and angled weight horns with spring collars accommodate a wide height range (The Jungle Gym Reviews, r/homegym)
  • Durability: frame and pendulum-arm flex reported under heavier loads (150+ lbs), with back-pad wood creaking noted around 180-190 lbs (King of the Gym)
  • Build quality: bolt-together construction with recurring hardware QC issues — mis-threaded bolts and low-quality footboard/safety-arm pop pins (r/homegym, The Jungle Gym Reviews)
  • Build quality: budget-grade padding and vinyl finishes, and a foot plate that isn't very grippy out of the box (The Jungle Gym Reviews, r/homegym)
  • Versatility: single-exercise machine limited to pendulum squat variations, with a practical load ceiling well under its advertised 800 lb capacity (The Jungle Gym Reviews, King of the Gym)
