Precor Icarian Commercial Seated Leg Curl

The Icarian Commercial Seated Leg Curl (model 619) is a selectorized hamstring machine from Precor’s now-discontinued Icarian Strength Line, a 23-piece commercial variable-resistance circuit. The lifter sits upright and flexes the knees against an adjustable lower-leg pad in a curling motion, with a thigh restraint that adjusts to ease entry and exit and is available with or without a range-of-motion (ROM) limiting device. Precor has since folded the Icarian line into its current Resolute and Discovery selectorized strength lines, so this exact model is no longer sold new – it survives on the used and refurbished commercial-equipment market, where its compact footprint relative to comparable commercial leg extension/leg curl machines remains a frequently cited selling point.

What is a Machine?

What a strength machine is

A strength machine guides the resistance along a fixed path so you can train a movement safely, often without a spotter. The main types: selectorized (pick weight with a pin), plate-loaded (add your own plates for a heavier ceiling and better feel), and functional trainers / cable machines (adjustable pulleys for dozens of exercises).

Machines vs. free weights

Machines shine for isolation, safety, and high-rep hypertrophy, and for training hard alone. Free weights build more stabilizer strength and carry over better to sport. Most well-rounded home gyms use a rack and barbell as the core and add one machine — often a cable/functional trainer or a lat-pulldown/row — to fill the gaps.

The sub-types worth knowing

“Machines” covers several categories that barely compete with each other: GHDs for hamstring and posterior-chain work, belt squats for loading the legs without the bar on your back, leg press / hack squat combos for heavy quad volume, reverse hypers for posterior-chain work and lower-back decompression, cable towers and functional trainers for pulling movements, and row machines. Pick the one that fills a gap in what your rack and barbell already do. Almost nobody needs two.

Space and standalone vs. rack-mounted

Most of these come in a standalone version and a cheaper rack-attachment version. The attachment saves floor space and money, but often gives up stability or range of motion — a tradeoff worth checking on the specific product rather than assuming, since it varies a lot between designs.

A note on ratings

Machine listings frequently show a manufacturer’s own on-site rating, which runs high (4.7–5.0 is typical) and sometimes pools reviews across a whole product family rather than the exact configuration you’re buying. Where we have independent hands-on coverage, our summaries anchor to that instead, and say so on the product page.

The Icarian Commercial Seated Leg Curl (model 619) is a discontinued Precor-line hamstring machine that still shows up on the used/refurbished commercial-equipment market years after Precor folded Icarian into its Resolute and Discovery selectorized lines. Its standout dimension is build quality: 11-gauge and 7-gauge bent electro-weld steel tubing and a 559 lb frame give it the heft of a true commercial machine, and the one independent reviewer who put it through reps called the motion “so freaking good” at a mid-range weight setting. Its weakest dimension is value: with the Icarian line discontinued, there is no current manufacturer or retail listing at all – buyers can only source it secondhand at prices that vary by dealer and condition, and the same reviewer’s closer look flagged an essentially flat resistance profile (no shaped cam curve) plus a forward-pull sensation at heavier loads, compared favorably-but-not-decisively against a Cybex VR2 and a Prime Strive leg curl.

  • +Build quality: 11-gauge and 7-gauge bent electro-weld steel tubing, 559 lb commercial-grade frame (manufacturer spec sheet)
  • +Functionality: smooth, comfortable motion at an appropriately matched weight -- "feels so freaking good" (YouTube reviewer)
  • +Functionality: adjustable thigh restraint eases entry/exit, available with or without a range-of-motion limiting device (manufacturer spec sheet)
  • +Functionality: leg-length pad adjusts and torques down tight, holding position without popping loose (YouTube reviewer)
  • Value: Icarian line is discontinued -- no current manufacturer or retailer listing, only secondhand/refurbished dealer inventory at variable prices
  • Functionality: essentially flat resistance profile with no shaped cam curve, unlike some commercial rivals (YouTube reviewer)
  • Functionality: some forward-pull sensation at heavier loads depending on pad angle and seat position (YouTube reviewer)
  • Durability: no independent long-term reliability data beyond the fact that decades-old used units are still functional and resold (inferred from secondhand market)
