Buy NowThe York Barbell 2” Cast Iron Olympic Weight Plate is York’s standard, no-frills cast iron plate – described by the manufacturer as “the meat & potatoes of the York line,” built for solid, no-nonsense muscle-building power rather than special coatings or grip features. It’s sold individually across six weights (2.5, 5, 10, 25, 35, and 45 lb) with a standard 2” Olympic sleeve bore, making it a budget-friendly way to fill out an existing plate collection in either a home or commercial gym. It sits below York’s pricier Legacy precision-milled line on both price and tolerance – r/homegym buyers note this standard line’s diameters run larger than some competing plates (the 45 lb plate measures 17” versus the 450mm some calibrated plates use), and one owner reported inconsistent quality control out of the box (sharp edges, oversized center holes, shoddy paint). Others found the sleeve fit acceptably snug. It carries a standard 1-year warranty and is HSA/FSA eligible.

Weight plates load your barbell — but “plate” covers two very different tools. Bumper plates are rubber discs around a steel hub, all the same ~450mm diameter, built to be dropped from overhead without damaging your floor or bar; they’re the default for Olympic lifting and CrossFit. Iron/steel plates are denser and thinner per pound, cheaper, and quieter to load, but most aren’t made to be dropped — better for slow, controlled powerlifting-style work.
Every barbell gym needs plates. Most home lifters should start with a bumper set, then add iron, change, or specialty plates as a second purchase once they know what their training is missing.

York Barbell’s 2” Cast Iron Olympic Weight Plate is the company’s no-frills, budget-tier plate – sold individually from 2.5 lb to 45 lb with no special coating or grip features, positioned well below York’s own Legacy precision-milled line. Its standout dimension is value: at $3.57-$64.35 depending on weight, it’s an inexpensive way to fill out an Olympic-hole plate collection. Its weakest dimension is build quality – r/homegym buyers report inconsistent quality control, with one describing “sharp edges, overly large holes, shoddy paint, and some of the loosest weight tolerances I’ve ever seen,” while others found the same line’s sleeve fit acceptably snug. Buyers should also expect the individual 45 lb plates to run oversized (17” diameter) rather than the “standard” 450mm some competing plates use.
