Troy’s VTX line is a full-rubber bumper plate with a steel insert, sold individually (not in pairs) across five weights: 10, 15, 25, 35, and 45 lb. The rubber formulation is built for a mix of low bounce and high durability, and the 10 and 15 lb plates use a “hooked” steel insert for extra stability versus typical lightweight bumpers. Plates are color-coded with dual pound/kilogram markings, share a common diameter for easy mixed-plate loading, and are guaranteed to within ±3% of their stated weight. Troy backs them with a no-questions-asked satisfaction guarantee and a 1-year manufacturer warranty – shorter than the 2-3 year warranties offered by some pricier competitors. Independent coverage is generally positive for typical home-gym use, but a documented case of repeated cracked 25 lb plates under heavy institutional (high-school team) use, plus a report of plates shipping coated in a hard-to-remove waxy grease, are worth knowing going in.

What is a Weight Plate?

What weight plates are

Weight plates load your barbell — but “plate” covers two very different tools. Bumper plates are rubber discs around a steel hub, all the same ~450mm diameter, built to be dropped from overhead without damaging your floor or bar; they’re the default for Olympic lifting and CrossFit. Iron/steel plates are denser and thinner per pound, cheaper, and quieter to load, but most aren’t made to be dropped — better for slow, controlled powerlifting-style work.

What actually matters

  • Bumper vs. iron. Buy bumpers if the bar might hit the floor; iron (or rubber-coated iron) for controlled lifts and compact loading.
  • Weight tolerance. How far a plate strays from its stated weight (±1% is tight, ±3% loose). It barely matters for general training but adds up if you chase a specific total — which is why serious lifters add small change / fractional plates.
  • Collar fit & bounce. The center hole should fit your bar’s sleeve snugly; rubber durometer (around 88 Shore A) controls how “dead” a dropped plate lands.
  • Coating & set composition. Virgin rubber holds up and smells less than recycled crumb rubber; plan a starting set (usually a pair each of 45/25/10/5 lb plus change plates) around the lifts you actually do.

Who it’s for

Every barbell gym needs plates. Most home lifters should start with a bumper set, then add iron, change, or specialty plates as a second purchase once they know what their training is missing.

The Troy VTX bumpers are a solid entry-level to mid-range bumper plate: independent reviews from Garage Gym Reviews and FringeSport praise the steel-insert construction, low bounce, and a thinner profile than many competitors, and pricing undercuts most name-brand bumpers. The standout dimension is value — a full 260 lb set runs well under $500 with a color-coded, dual lb/kg design. The weakest dimension is durability: a Starting Strength forum thread documents a high-school strength coach’s repeated cracked 25 lb plates under heavy institutional use and a slow, unhelpful response from Troy/USA Sports, and a separate buyer complaint describes plates arriving coated in a stubborn waxy grease. Typical home-gym use (lighter volume than a school weight room) should fare better, but buyers should expect only a one-year warranty versus the 2-3 years offered by pricier competitors.

  • +Value: full 260 lb set priced well under $500, with steel inserts and dual lb/kg markings (olympicweightsetreview.com)
  • +Functionality: thinner profile than comparable bumpers lets more weight load per bar (Garage Gym Reviews, olympicweightsetreview.com)
  • +Build quality: hooked steel insert on 10/15 lb plates adds stability versus typical lightweight bumpers (Garage Gym Reviews)
  • +Durability: redesigned plates are a "huge improvement" over older Troy bumpers, with low bounce and a smooth finish (FringeSport)
  • Durability: a high-school strength coach documented repeated cracked 25 lb plates under heavy team use, with a slow and largely unhelpful response from Troy/USA Sports (Starting Strength forum)
  • Build quality: one buyer reported plates arriving coated in a stubborn waxy grease that took multiple degreaser applications to remove (YouTube)
  • Value: only a one-year no-questions-asked warranty versus 2-3 years from pricier competitors (olympicweightsetreview.com)
  • Versatility: independent review volume is thin (GymRadar shows just 3 reviews), so confidence in the verdict is moderate
