Titan Fitness’s LB Black Change Plates are fractional weight plates built to let lifters make smaller-than-standard jumps in weight – 1.25, 2.5, 5, and 10 lb pairs, sold individually or as a complete 37.5 lb set. Each plate is a rubber-coated steel insert with a matte black finish and color-coded weight markings, sized to a snug 51mm (+/- 0.2mm) Olympic collar opening so it sits securely against the sleeve rather than sliding under a loaded bar. Reviewers and r/homegym owners consistently point to value as the standout here – the plates are widely described as “the best bang for the buck” among fractional sets, with buyers noting the whole 37.5 lb set costs roughly what a single premium-brand change plate runs elsewhere. The tradeoff is build quality relative to pricier rivals like Rogue or Griffin, which some Reddit owners who’ve since upgraded describe as a step up in materials and fit, though no reviewer reported failures or slipping on this black SKU specifically.

What is a Weight Plate?

What weight plates are

Weight plates load your barbell — but “plate” covers two very different tools. Bumper plates are rubber discs around a steel hub, all the same ~450mm diameter, built to be dropped from overhead without damaging your floor or bar; they’re the default for Olympic lifting and CrossFit. Iron/steel plates are denser and thinner per pound, cheaper, and quieter to load, but most aren’t made to be dropped — better for slow, controlled powerlifting-style work.

What actually matters

  • Bumper vs. iron. Buy bumpers if the bar might hit the floor; iron (or rubber-coated iron) for controlled lifts and compact loading.
  • Weight tolerance. How far a plate strays from its stated weight (±1% is tight, ±3% loose). It barely matters for general training but adds up if you chase a specific total — which is why serious lifters add small change / fractional plates.
  • Collar fit & bounce. The center hole should fit your bar’s sleeve snugly; rubber durometer (around 88 Shore A) controls how “dead” a dropped plate lands.
  • Coating & set composition. Virgin rubber holds up and smells less than recycled crumb rubber; plan a starting set (usually a pair each of 45/25/10/5 lb plus change plates) around the lifts you actually do.

Who it’s for

Every barbell gym needs plates. Most home lifters should start with a bumper set, then add iron, change, or specialty plates as a second purchase once they know what their training is missing.

Titan’s LB Black Change Plates are a budget-friendly fractional plate set – rubber-coated steel inserts in 1.25, 2.5, 5, and 10 lb pairs (37.5 lb full set) with a snug 51mm Olympic collar opening. Its standout dimension is value: reviewers and r/homegym buyers repeatedly call them “a great deal” and “the best bang for the buck” among fractional plates, with one YouTuber noting the whole 37.5 lb set costs about what a single premium change plate does elsewhere. Its weakest dimension is build quality relative to premium rivals – Reddit owners who’ve since switched to premium brands like Rogue or Griffin describe Titan’s as noticeably lower quality, though without citing a specific defect beyond preference, and no reviewer reported failures or fit issues on this black SKU specifically.

  • +Value: full 37.5 lb set retails around $155-170 (sale pricing), with reviewers noting it costs about the same as a single higher-end change plate elsewhere (Titan Fitness; YouTube)
  • +Functionality: 51mm collar opening gives a snug, non-sliding fit tested by dropping loaded bars from the hip, chest, and overhead with no shifting (YouTube)
  • +Durability: one month-and-a-half owner reported no chipping despite rough handling and repeated drops (YouTube)
  • +Versatility: five weight increments (1.25 to 10 lb pairs) let lifters make jumps as small as half a pound to push through plateaus (YouTube)
  • +Value: r/homegym buyers consistently flag Titan's fractional plates as "the best bang for the buck" in the category (r/homegym)
  • Build quality: owners who upgraded to Rogue or Griffin plates describe Titan's as lower quality, though without naming a specific defect (r/homegym)
  • Build quality: Titan's fractional plates are described as Rogue-design knockoffs made in China, versus Rogue's Ohio manufacturing (r/homegym)
  • Build quality: no metal insert in the smallest 0.25 lb plate (all-rubber), unlike the heavier increments (YouTube)
  • Durability: independent long-term ownership data is thin -- signal is a handful of YouTube reviews and Reddit comments rather than sustained editorial coverage
  • Build quality: GymRadar's own rating sample is small (n=4), limiting how much weight it can carry as an independent signal (GymRadar)
