The Ivanko OMEZH is a cast-iron Olympic grip plate built around Ivanko’s patented E-Z Lift design: seven evenly spaced, fully machined round openings with smooth radii and rounded edges, rather than the two or three holes found on typical grip plates. That extra grip surface dramatically improves handling on and off the floor, bars, and machines, while the rounded contour is easier and more comfortable to hold onto than a standard plain-face plate. Plates are sand-cast (not machined from solid billet) and finished in a baked-on, polyester-based hammertone grey coating; minor surface/porosity variation is inherent to the casting process and, per the manufacturer, does not constitute a defect. It shares the same diameter as conventional round Olympic plates, so it drops into an existing plate collection rather than requiring a full swap, and companion lighter sizes (10, 5, 2.5, and 1.25 lb.) are available without grip holes under Ivanko’s OM line. It’s widely regarded in the home-gym community as a premium, “end game” grip plate – praised for genuinely tight machining tolerances – but it commands a real price premium and longer lead times over newer hexagonal-hole rivals.

What is a Weight Plate?

What weight plates are

Weight plates load your barbell — but “plate” covers two very different tools. Bumper plates are rubber discs around a steel hub, all the same ~450mm diameter, built to be dropped from overhead without damaging your floor or bar; they’re the default for Olympic lifting and CrossFit. Iron/steel plates are denser and thinner per pound, cheaper, and quieter to load, but most aren’t made to be dropped — better for slow, controlled powerlifting-style work.

What actually matters

  • Bumper vs. iron. Buy bumpers if the bar might hit the floor; iron (or rubber-coated iron) for controlled lifts and compact loading.
  • Weight tolerance. How far a plate strays from its stated weight (±1% is tight, ±3% loose). It barely matters for general training but adds up if you chase a specific total — which is why serious lifters add small change / fractional plates.
  • Collar fit & bounce. The center hole should fit your bar’s sleeve snugly; rubber durometer (around 88 Shore A) controls how “dead” a dropped plate lands.
  • Coating & set composition. Virgin rubber holds up and smells less than recycled crumb rubber; plan a starting set (usually a pair each of 45/25/10/5 lb plus change plates) around the lifts you actually do.

Who it’s for

Every barbell gym needs plates. Most home lifters should start with a bumper set, then add iron, change, or specialty plates as a second purchase once they know what their training is missing.

Ivanko’s OMEZH is the reference “shooter-style” grip plate the rest of the market gets compared to, and functionality is the clear standout: seven smooth-radius round openings (more than rival designs) make loading and carrying dramatically easier than a standard plain-face Olympic plate, especially with sweaty hands. Build quality is also consistently praised – reviewers and long-time owners cite genuinely tight machining tolerances on the fully machined face, back, and edges, and community reports of dropping loaded plates from knee height without issue speak to real-world durability. The weakest dimension is value: OMEZH plates are repeatedly flagged, by both editorial and community sources, as expensive and harder to source than newer hexagonal-hole rivals like REP’s Urethane Equalizers, which are pitched explicitly as a cheaper, easier-to-find alternative. Versatility is solid, sharing a standard diameter with conventional Olympic plates so it drops into an existing collection, though buyers should budget for the premium and expect longer lead times than a big-box iron plate.

  • +Functionality: seven smooth-radius round grip openings make loading/carrying noticeably easier than standard plain-face plates, including with sweaty hands (r/homegym community)
  • +Build quality: genuinely tight machining tolerances on the fully machined face, back, and edges, repeatedly cited as best-in-class among grip plates (r/homegym community; Garage Gym Lab)
  • +Durability: owners report dropping loaded plates from knee height with no issues; used-market resale commands a real premium ($1.50-$3/lb), reflecting long service life and desirability (r/homegym community)
  • +Versatility: shares standard Olympic plate diameter, integrating cleanly with an existing plate collection rather than requiring a full swap (manufacturer)
  • Value: consistently flagged as expensive relative to newer alternatives like REP's Urethane Equalizers and Rogue's six-hole design, which are positioned as functionally equivalent at a lower price (Garage Gym Lab; r/homegym community)
  • Value: harder to source than rival grip plates -- multiple buyers describe a real wait or hunt to get a full set (r/homegym community)
  • Build quality: sand-cast (not billet-machined) construction means some surface/porosity variation is inherent, per the manufacturer's own disclosure (manufacturer)
  • Functionality: coverage is thin beyond community anecdote -- no dedicated full-length editorial or video review exists for this specific SKU, only a comparison aside in a competitor's review
