REP® Nighthawk™ - Adjustable Bench

The Nighthawk is REP’s do-everything adjustable bench refined: 7- and 14-gauge steel, a laser-cut ladder for exact angles, seven back and four seat positions, a tight 1.57” pad gap, and a 700 lb capacity — all at 88 lb and $449.99. It is the bench many reviewers now recommend by default for a home gym. The closer- to-zero-gap AB-5000 and the value AB-4100 are the natural cross-shops within REP’s line; the BlackWing is the lighter, more portable option.

What is a Adjustable Bench?

What an adjustable bench is

An adjustable bench tilts from flat to incline (and often decline) so one bench covers flat press, incline press, shoulder work, and rows. It’s usually the second thing people buy after a rack and bar — and the piece you press heavy over, so build quality matters.

What actually matters

  • Pad gap. The gap between the seat and back pad at incline. A big gap lets you slide down under heavy incline pressing; the best benches minimize or close it (“zero-gap”). It’s the single most-cited bench complaint.
  • Weight capacity. Compare the rated capacity to your bodyweight plus the heaviest load you’ll press. 1,000 lb-class benches are common and leave margin.
  • Adjustment ladder & seat angles. More back-pad angles (often 6-7) plus multiple seat angles mean better positioning; a ladder-style adjustment is fast and rock-solid.
  • FID vs. flat-to-incline. FID (flat-incline-decline) adds decline; many home lifters never use it, so a flat-to-incline bench is fine and often cheaper.
  • Wobble, pad width & footprint. A wide, firm pad and a stable frame with minimal rock make heavy pressing safer; check the standing/folded footprint if space is tight.

Who it’s for

Anyone doing barbell or dumbbell pressing at home. A flat bench is enough if you only bench flat; otherwise an adjustable bench is the more versatile buy. Most home lifters are well served in the $400-$600 range.

The Nighthawk has become REP’s default bench recommendation, and the reviews back it up: it’s the #1 most-owned adjustable bench on GymRadar, and Gray Matter Lifting’s family preferred it over six other benches when given a choice. Build quality and stability are the clear standouts — 88 lbs that reviewers say “feels lighter than the AB-4100,” recessed hardware, and a tripod base that held up to a 335 lb bench session without wobble, all at $150 less than REP’s own BlackWing. The catch is versatility: the promised leg curl/extension attachment has been “years in development” with nothing shipped, so this is a bench to buy for pressing fundamentals today, not for a future attachment ecosystem.

  • +Build quality: 7- and 14-gauge steel frame, recessed hardware, and CleanGrip vinyl that testers rank above some commercial gym benches (Gray Matter Lifting, Garage Gym Reviews)
  • +Functionality: 7 back-pad angles, IPF-compliant 16.7" height, and an enclosed ladder system deliver smooth, precise adjustments (REP product page, Gray Matter Lifting)
  • +Value: undercuts the premium BlackWing by $150 while matching its stability for straight pressing work (Gray Matter Lifting)
  • +Durability: handled a 335 lb bench press and years of mixed-user family testing with no reported wobble or wear (Gray Matter Lifting)
  • Versatility: the promised leg curl/leg extension attachment has been in development for years with nothing shipped, so treat the ecosystem as aspirational (r/homegym, Gray Matter Lifting)
  • Functionality: no native decline position, and the roughly 1.57" pad gap is more noticeable than zero-gap rivals (The Jungle Gym Reviews, Garage Gym Reviews)
  • Build quality: Garage Gym Reviews measured the height slightly under IPF spec despite REP's own 16.7" claim, a discrepancy worth flagging (Garage Gym Reviews)
  • Functionality: only 7 back angles in roughly 15-degree jumps, skipping in-between positions some lifters want (The Jungle Gym Reviews)
