Reversible Olympic Mega Hex Weightlifting Bar

CAP Barbell’s Reversible Olympic Mega Hex Weightlifting Bar (OB-91HC-IS) is a 75 lb hex/trap bar built from zinc-coated solid steel with a 1,000 lb weight capacity. Its defining feature is a reversible design: flip the bar to choose between raised handles for a higher pull height – helpful for taller lifters – or flush handles for a standard Olympic bar height. Two neutral-grip handle pairs on each side, knurled to a 1.25” (32mm) diameter, keep the hands aligned with the body for deadlifts, shrugs, farmer’s walks, and bent-over rows. The frame spans 63” long with 24” of inside width between handles and 2” non-rotating sleeves that accept standard Olympic or bumper plates; collars are not included.

What is a Barbell?

What a barbell is

The barbell is the center of a strength gym — the bar you squat, press, deadlift, and clean with. A men’s Olympic bar is 20 kg (44 lb) and 7.2 ft long (15 kg / 6.5 ft for women). The specs that matter: knurl (the grip texture — aggressive for pulls, milder for high-rep work), shaft diameter (28–29 mm for barbell lifts), sleeve rotation (bushings are fine for slow lifts; bearings spin fast for the Olympic lifts), tensile strength (~190k+ PSI resists bending), and coating (bare steel grips best but rusts; stainless and Cerakote trade grip for corrosion resistance).

Which one to buy

For general lifting, a multipurpose bar (28–28.5mm shaft, dual knurl marks, no center knurl) does squats, bench, deadlifts, and the occasional clean off one bar — this is the right first barbell for most home gyms. Choose a dedicated power bar (29mm, stiffer, aggressive center-knurl grip) only once you know you’re training squat/bench/deadlift specifically and want the stiffest, grippiest tool for that job. A dedicated Olympic weightlifting bar (needle bearings, more whip) is worth it only if you clean, snatch, or jerk regularly.

Beyond your main bar, specialty bars solve specific problems rather than replacing it: a safety squat bar shifts load off sore shoulders, a trap/hex bar takes stress off a cranky lower back on pulls, and a curl bar’s camber reduces wrist strain on isolation work. Add them once you know which problem you actually have.

CAP Barbell’s Reversible Olympic Mega Hex Weightlifting Bar earns its “mega” name with a 75 lb, zinc-coated frame and reversible handles that flip between a raised pull height for taller lifters and a standard Olympic-height stance – functionality reviewers consistently single out as the standout feature. Build quality is solid but uneven: it’s held up to loads past 460 lbs without issue, but both GymRadar reviewers and a hands-on YouTube review note the low handles are knurled noticeably more aggressively than the high ones. Value is the weakest mark – one GymRadar reviewer calls it merely “okay” and cites awkward plate loading, while another suggests a modern open trap bar can be had for similar money.

  • +Versatility: doubles for deadlifts, shrugs, farmer's walks, bent-over rows, and bench press variations (YouTube: Weak Endz Barbell Club)
  • +Build quality: robust 75 lb, zinc-coated steel construction rated to 1,000 lbs (manufacturer; GymRadar)
  • Build quality: knurling is inconsistent -- the low handles are noticeably more aggressive than the high handles (GymRadar; YouTube: Weak Endz Barbell Club)
  • Value: reviewers call it merely "okay," citing difficulty loading plates onto the bar (GymRadar)
  • Value: a comparably priced open trap bar may be a better buy for some lifters today (GymRadar)
