Safety Squat Bar - The SS4

The SS4 is Bells of Steel’s cambered safety squat bar, built to let lifters squat heavy without the shoulder, wrist, and elbow strain of a straight bar on the back. Independent reviewers – including The Jungle Gym Reviews and Shredded Dad – call it one of the best-value safety squat bars from a major manufacturer, largely because the SS4 finally swaps the SS3’s rubber-coated grips for knurled metal handles, and adds a needle-bearing sleeve rotation and a new seal-row handle attachment. At 45.6 lbs (without handles), it’s noticeably lighter than the 58-68 lb bars from Titan and REP, which reviewers say makes it easier to store upright and simpler to do plate math with, since it weighs about the same as a standard Olympic barbell. The forward-facing handles and 22-degree camber let it balance hands-free on the shoulders, and interchangeable straight, spider, seal row, and chain handles extend it to good mornings, JM presses, front squats, and lunges. The main tradeoff is sleeve length: at 11.8” of loadable sleeve, it’s shorter than the 15.6-16” typical of Rep, Titan, and Elite FTS safety squat bars, so heavy bumper-plate loading hits the sleeve’s physical limit well before the bar’s claimed 1,500 lb rating.

What is a Barbell?

What a barbell is

The barbell is the center of a strength gym — the bar you squat, press, deadlift, and clean with. A men’s Olympic bar is 20 kg (44 lb) and 7.2 ft long (15 kg / 6.5 ft for women). The specs that matter: knurl (the grip texture — aggressive for pulls, milder for high-rep work), shaft diameter (28–29 mm for barbell lifts), sleeve rotation (bushings are fine for slow lifts; bearings spin fast for the Olympic lifts), tensile strength (~190k+ PSI resists bending), and coating (bare steel grips best but rusts; stainless and Cerakote trade grip for corrosion resistance).

Which one to buy

For general lifting, a multipurpose bar (28–28.5mm shaft, dual knurl marks, no center knurl) does squats, bench, deadlifts, and the occasional clean off one bar — this is the right first barbell for most home gyms. Choose a dedicated power bar (29mm, stiffer, aggressive center-knurl grip) only once you know you’re training squat/bench/deadlift specifically and want the stiffest, grippiest tool for that job. A dedicated Olympic weightlifting bar (needle bearings, more whip) is worth it only if you clean, snatch, or jerk regularly.

Beyond your main bar, specialty bars solve specific problems rather than replacing it: a safety squat bar shifts load off sore shoulders, a trap/hex bar takes stress off a cranky lower back on pulls, and a curl bar’s camber reduces wrist strain on isolation work. Add them once you know which problem you actually have.

Bells of Steel’s SS4 is a well-regarded budget-to-midrange safety squat bar, with independent reviewers (The Jungle Gym Reviews, Shredded Dad, and multiple YouTube testers) converging on it as one of the best value SSBs from a major manufacturer, praised for finally adding knurled metal handles in place of the SS3’s rubber grips. Build quality is its standout dimension — needle-bearing sleeves, a 1,500 lb-rated shaft, and a lighter 45.6 lb frame that’s easier to store and load than the 58-68 lb bars from Titan and REP. Functionality is the softest spot: the shorter 11.8” loadable sleeve length caps how much can be racked with bumper plates compared to longer-sleeved rivals, and slick sleeves need collars for safety.

  • +Build quality: knurled metal handles replace the SS3's cheaper rubber grips (The Jungle Gym Reviews, Shredded Dad)
  • +Build quality: needle-bearing sleeves and a 1,500 lb / 100,000 PSI tensile rating at this price point (Bells of Steel, The Jungle Gym Reviews)
  • +Value: undercuts Titan and REP's safety squat bars while matching or beating their bearing/handle features (Shredded Dad, YouTube: The Jungle Gym Reviews)
  • +Functionality: at 45.6 lbs it's lighter and easier to balance hands-free than the 58-68 lb bars from Titan and REP (The Jungle Gym Reviews, YouTube: The Jungle Gym Reviews)
  • +Versatility: interchangeable straight, spider, seal row, and chain handles support squats, good mornings, JM presses, and lunges (Bells of Steel, YouTube: Red Allen Fitness)
  • Functionality: 11.8in loadable sleeve length is shorter than the 15.6-16in typical of Rep/Titan/Elite FTS bars, capping bumper-plate capacity well below the claimed 1,500 lbs (Shredded Dad, The Jungle Gym Reviews)
  • Functionality: slick sleeves require collars when loading bumper plates for safety (Shredded Dad)
  • Build quality: paint/finish scratches easily and can mar contact points on some racks (YouTube: Red Allen Fitness)
  • Durability: independent long-term testing is thin -- most coverage is early-ownership or unboxing rather than years-in-use (knowledge base)
