Buy NowThe ‘Thumper’ Thin Bumper Weight Plates are Weight It Out’s ultra-thin bumper line, built around a solid steel core encased in a compression- molded polyurethane shell rather than the crumb rubber used in most bumpers. The 45 lb plate is only 1.3” thick – roughly half the width of a standard 45 lb bumper – letting lifters load far more weight onto a barbell, specialty bar, or plate-loaded machine sleeve before running out of room. A 90 durometer rating makes the plates dense and firm with noticeably less bounce than a typical rubber bumper, though reviewers note that firmness also means less floor and barbell protection than a true competition bumper on hard drops. Plates are sold in pairs across five weights (2.5-45 lb), backed by a lifetime warranty, and are made in the USA.

Weight plates load your barbell — but “plate” covers two very different tools. Bumper plates are rubber discs around a steel hub, all the same ~450mm diameter, built to be dropped from overhead without damaging your floor or bar; they’re the default for Olympic lifting and CrossFit. Iron/steel plates are denser and thinner per pound, cheaper, and quieter to load, but most aren’t made to be dropped — better for slow, controlled powerlifting-style work.
Every barbell gym needs plates. Most home lifters should start with a bumper set, then add iron, change, or specialty plates as a second purchase once they know what their training is missing.

The ‘Thumper’ Thin Bumper Weight Plates win reviewers over on raw functionality: a 45 lb plate barely thicker than a standard 15 lb bumper means a lot more weight fits on a barbell, specialty bar, or plate-loaded machine sleeve before running out of sleeve length. Build quality is the standout dimension – a solid steel core wrapped in a dense, 90-durometer polyurethane shell reads as a genuinely different (not novelty) design, with accurate weight (44.9 lb measured on a labeled 45 lb plate) and tight tolerances. Durability under impact is the weakest dimension: that same low-bounce firmness means less floor and barbell protection than a true competition bumper on hard or overhead drops, and reviewers specifically flag them as a poor fit for heavy overhead work.
