The VTX Rubber Grip Plate is Troy Barbell & Fitness’s “Quiet Iron” line – a rubber-encased Olympic plate built for light-commercial and home-gym use (school weight rooms, apartment gyms, training studios, hotel fitness centers). The 10 lb, 25 lb, 35 lb, and 45 lb sizes feature Troy’s three-slotted grip design, letting lifters load and unload the bar from multiple angles without needing to pinch a bare edge; the 2.5 lb and 5 lb plates are too thin to support grip slots and ship without them. A steel center-bore insert gives a snugger fit on most 2” Olympic bars, and the rubber coating both quiets the plate against a rack or floor and protects it (and the floor) from impact damage. Troy rates the line to 3% weight accuracy – tighter than economy iron plates, though looser than Troy’s own premium urethane-coated lines.

What is a Weight Plate?

What weight plates are

Weight plates load your barbell — but “plate” covers two very different tools. Bumper plates are rubber discs around a steel hub, all the same ~450mm diameter, built to be dropped from overhead without damaging your floor or bar; they’re the default for Olympic lifting and CrossFit. Iron/steel plates are denser and thinner per pound, cheaper, and quieter to load, but most aren’t made to be dropped — better for slow, controlled powerlifting-style work.

What actually matters

  • Bumper vs. iron. Buy bumpers if the bar might hit the floor; iron (or rubber-coated iron) for controlled lifts and compact loading.
  • Weight tolerance. How far a plate strays from its stated weight (±1% is tight, ±3% loose). It barely matters for general training but adds up if you chase a specific total — which is why serious lifters add small change / fractional plates.
  • Collar fit & bounce. The center hole should fit your bar’s sleeve snugly; rubber durometer (around 88 Shore A) controls how “dead” a dropped plate lands.
  • Coating & set composition. Virgin rubber holds up and smells less than recycled crumb rubber; plan a starting set (usually a pair each of 45/25/10/5 lb plus change plates) around the lifts you actually do.

Who it’s for

Every barbell gym needs plates. Most home lifters should start with a bumper set, then add iron, change, or specialty plates as a second purchase once they know what their training is missing.

The VTX Rubber Grip Plate is a mid-range rubber-coated iron plate that consistently earns a “just fine” to “great value” verdict rather than a “best in class” one – reviewers and owners like it, but nobody calls it premium. Its standout dimension is value: r/homegym owners repeatedly use it as the benchmark budget rubber-coated buyers compare cheaper alternatives against, citing durability through years of dropped reps. Its weakest dimension is build quality: a visible rubber coating seam on the edges and a looser ~4% weight tolerance mark it as a notch below Troy’s own premium urethane lines, and a couple of owners have reported individual plates that don’t balance perfectly on the bar.

  • +Functionality: three-slotted grip design on the 25/35/45 lb plates speeds up loading/unloading without juggling plates (manufacturer, Two Rep Cave)
  • +Value: repeatedly cited on r/homegym as the price/quality benchmark other budget rubber-coated plates are measured against
  • +Durability: owners report years of regular use, including drops, with no reported failures
  • +Functionality: steel hub construction quiets the sleeve-loading "zzzziiiiip" noise typical of bare iron plates (Two Rep Cave)
  • Build quality: visible rubber coating seam on the plate edges, a cosmetic step down from Troy's premium urethane line (Two Rep Cave)
  • Build quality: ~4% weight tolerance is looser than Troy's premium plates, so exact-weight lifters may notice drift (Two Rep Cave)
  • Versatility: the 2.5 lb and 5 lb plates have no grip slots -- too thin to support them -- so the handling benefit doesn't extend to the lightest plates
  • Build quality: occasional QC complaint of an individual plate not balancing evenly on the sleeve until it settles (r/homegym)
