Vulcan’s Absolute Calibrated plates are steel powerlifting plates built for competition-grade precision: brass calibration plugs bring every plate within ±10 grams of its stated weight, comfortably inside IPF and USPA competition tolerances. They’re machined on the back side and outer lip, powder-coated in a distinct color per weight (chrome for the smallest fractional plates through red at 25kg), and stamped with the Vulcan eagle logo and legible weight markings. The line spans 0.25kg to 25kg, sold in pairs or as one of seven preset sets from 159kg to 459kg, with a 50mm collar opening sized for standard barbell sleeves. Vulcan backs them with a lifetime warranty for indoor use on rubber flooring, though normal cosmetic wear – the powder coat is prone to chipping with regular handling – isn’t covered.

What is a Weight Plate?

What weight plates are

Weight plates load your barbell — but “plate” covers two very different tools. Bumper plates are rubber discs around a steel hub, all the same ~450mm diameter, built to be dropped from overhead without damaging your floor or bar; they’re the default for Olympic lifting and CrossFit. Iron/steel plates are denser and thinner per pound, cheaper, and quieter to load, but most aren’t made to be dropped — better for slow, controlled powerlifting-style work.

What actually matters

  • Bumper vs. iron. Buy bumpers if the bar might hit the floor; iron (or rubber-coated iron) for controlled lifts and compact loading.
  • Weight tolerance. How far a plate strays from its stated weight (±1% is tight, ±3% loose). It barely matters for general training but adds up if you chase a specific total — which is why serious lifters add small change / fractional plates.
  • Collar fit & bounce. The center hole should fit your bar’s sleeve snugly; rubber durometer (around 88 Shore A) controls how “dead” a dropped plate lands.
  • Coating & set composition. Virgin rubber holds up and smells less than recycled crumb rubber; plan a starting set (usually a pair each of 45/25/10/5 lb plus change plates) around the lifts you actually do.

Who it’s for

Every barbell gym needs plates. Most home lifters should start with a bumper set, then add iron, change, or specialty plates as a second purchase once they know what their training is missing.

Youtube 4.0/5 1 reviews Long-term owner recommends them for accuracy and balanced loading, but notes the paint chips easily and bundle sets skew toward large plates.

Vulcan’s Absolute Calibrated KG plates deliver genuine competition-grade accuracy at a below-average price for a calibrated plate, but the powder-coat finish takes visible damage quickly. Functionality is the standout: brass calibration plugs bring every plate within ±10g of its stated weight, comfortably inside IPF/USPA competition tolerances, and long-term owners report balanced loading straight out of the box. Build quality is the weak point — the painted finish chips and scuffs from ordinary garage-gym handling and transfers paint onto racks and collars, and the front-only flange design makes heavier plates awkward to pick up off the floor. GymRadar’s small early sample (3.44/5 across 3 reviews) sits a step below the glowing praise in expert write-ups and video reviews, so treat the top-end scores with some caution until more independent data accumulates.

  • +Functionality: brass calibration plugs hold plates to a ±10g tolerance and meet IPF/USPA competition standards (Vulcan Strength; Garage Gym Lab)
  • +Value: priced at the low end for a branded calibrated plate — a long-term owner called it 'the cheapest' branded option with real accuracy (YouTube: Natural Hypertrophy)
  • +Build quality: full 0.25kg-25kg weight range with a distinct color and legible weight marking per size (Vulcan Strength; YouTube: Natural Hypertrophy)
  • +Versatility: seven complete set options from 159kg to 459kg alongside individual pairs (Vulcan Strength)
  • Build quality: powder coat finish chips and scratches easily with regular use, transferring paint onto racks and collars (Garage Gym Lab; YouTube: Natural Hypertrophy)
  • Functionality: front-only flanges make floor pickups awkward, and the smooth painted rim gets slippery, especially on wood platforms (Garage Gym Lab; YouTube: Natural Hypertrophy)
  • Versatility: bundle sets skew heavily toward large plates, leaving buyers short on fractional plates unless bought separately (YouTube: Natural Hypertrophy)
  • Durability: GymRadar's small owner sample (3 reviews) averages a middling 3.44/5, a notch below the glowing praise in editorial coverage (GymRadar)
